The Department of Transport and Management has introduced new driving license exam rules in trails system for cars and bikes.

Previously, a single mistake—like touching the yellow line, stepping on ground or forgetting to use sidelight—would result in instant failure. Due to this, the pass rate was low for both car and bike applicants.

Now, the new 70-point rule introduced by DOTM gives examinees a better chance of passing.

The examinee needs to score 70 out of 100 in the practical driving test (trial) to pass and get a diver’s license.

These are the new rules and driving tests you will give, but the good news is now we have a point system, and you will not get disqualified instantly for a mistake.

1. Eight Shape

This is the first stage of the driving trail in Nepal, and here you get 20 points for completing it successfully if no mistakes are made.

Negative Points: You will lose 5 points if you step while making eight shapes and if you touch the yellow line.

Disqualify: You will be disqualified if you touch the yellow line or step inside eight more than once. Additionally, touching a cone or driving out of boundaries is disqualifying.

2. Narrow Plank – Straight Line

This is one of the most straightforward tasks. Here, you need to drive in a straight narrow line; don’t go out of the line.

Completing this will give you 10 points, but you get disqualified if you make one mistake. Do not step on the ground or move out of the plank.

3. Traffic Light

You should follow this basic traffic rule according to the light during the trial exam.

You can earn 15 points if you complete this step and lose if you fail to follow the simple rule.

  • Green Light: Move Forward (GO)
  • Yellow Light: Move Slow (Red light within 5-6 sec)
  • Red Light: Complete Stop

4. U-Turn

You get 10 points for successful completion and are penalized 10 points for the mistake.

In this step, you must turn your indicator on (Side Light) a few seconds before turning. And if you fail or forget to do it, you will lose 10 points.

You will get disqualified if your Bike/Scooter touches the boundary.

5. Speedbreaker (Bumps)

Completing this will get you 15 points, and you will lose 5 points each for stepping on the ground and turning the engine off.

You will be disqualified if you repeatedly step on the ground and stop the engine more than once.

6. Slope

This is where most people fail the bike driving exam in Nepal. First, you must take the motorcycle upward and stop between two yellow lines. Then, wait for the signal to move forward and repeat the same on a downward slope.

7. Behavior

  1. This safety check protocol requires you to check mirrors, tyers and breaks before riding – 3 points.
  2. Helmet lock – 4 points
  3. Driving recklessly – 3 points.

After passing the trial, ask for your admission card signed by the traffic officer. Then, visit the transport office, pay the revenue fee.

This exam will have 100 points, and you will pass if you score 70 or more. There is a point deduction on every step of this trail system.

1. Eight – 20 marks

The first step of the Driving exam in Nepal is Driving on an eight shape which is difficult for many, and it has the highest point of 20, so you get two chances to pass this step successfully.

Negative Points: Your Points will get Deducted if your vehicle touches the yellow line. For each touch, 5 points will be deducted.

Disqualification: You will instantly fail if you enter from the wrong side, touch the yellow line more than two times, or your car’s tire goes out of the yellow line.

2. Speed Breaker – 15 Points

The second step after clearing the eight shapes is the Speed breaker, which contains 15 points where only one mistake is allowed.

Negative Points: This is an easy step. You only need clear the speed breaker without driving recklessly and stopping the engine. Stopping the machine will take 5 points.

Disqualification: You will be disqualified if your car’s engine stops twice.

3. U-Turn – 10 points

After clearing the speed breakers, you will head toward a U-turn with 10 points to gain and 10 to lose.

Negative Points: This is one of the easiest in this trial. All you need to do is turn on the indicator light(Side Light). But if you fail to do so, you will lose 10 points.

Disqualification: If you touch the lines.

5. Slope – 15 points

  • Failing to stop in the middle of the marked yellow lines.
  • The engine stops more than once.
  • If your car moves backward ( 6 inches or more )
  • If you don’t wait for the signal from the traffic.

6. Garage Parking – 20 points

As a newbie, I found this the most difficult here. In this stage, you need to make a perfect reverse turn. We call it ” L ” reverse your card and turn it, which makes it look like L, and then move forward.

Negative Points: You get one chance to move forward after reversing to correct or adjust your angle. But your 10 points will be deducted.

Disqualification: You will be disqualified if you cross the marked yellow lines or cones and move your car forward more than once (2 times).

7. Behavioral Aspects

This is the first and the last step for you. Here the traffic officials check how you drive and whether you are following the rules.

  • You will lose 3 points if you do not check vital info like (Mirror, Tire, and Breaks) before driving.
  • You will lose 3 points if you drive recklessly.
  • You will lose 4 points if you forget to tie your seat belt.
